Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago Committed to High Court

Former Kampala Lord Mayor and People's Front for Freedom (PFF) President Erias Lukwago has been committed to the High Court for trial on a charge of misprision of treason.

Lukwago appeared before the Makindye Chief Magistrate's Court on Thursday under tight security, looking visibly weak after missing his previous court appearance due to reported ill health. The committal follows the conclusion of prosecution proceedings, paving the way for a High Court trial.

The prosecution alleges that Lukwago knowingly failed to report information relating to an alleged plot to overthrow the Ugandan government by force of arms. State prosecutors claim that, as PFF president, he was aware of alleged activities involving senior party members but did not notify security authorities as required by law.

The case is linked to treason charges already facing PFF founder Dr. Kizza Besigye and his associate Hajj Obeid Lutale. Prosecutors say they will rely on electronic communications, immigration records, travel documents, forensic reports, and audio-visual recordings during the trial.

Before the case was committed, Lukwago's lawyers renewed their request for specialised medical treatment abroad, arguing that he suffers from complications related to previous spinal surgery, hypertension, respiratory issues, acid reflux, and balance problems. They maintain he requires urgent treatment in India.

Lukwago has denied all the allegations, insisting the charges against him are politically motivated. His case will now proceed before the High Court.
