Iryn Namubiru Says Music Industry Now Driven by Branding, Hints AI Could Replace Singing in Future
Iryn Namubiru has shared her perspective on the evolution of Uganda’s music industry, noting a significant shift from a talent-driven era to one now shaped by branding, technology, and digital influence.
Speaking during an interview with Spark TV, the celebrated vocalist described the transformation as largely positive, highlighting how today’s artistes present themselves better and earn more from their craft.
According to Namubiru, modern musicians are more polished, with stronger branding, stylish appearances, and improved financial returns that allow them to sustain a celebrity lifestyle.
“The music industry has evolved for the better. Musicians today look good, dress well, and earn enough to live the celebrity life,” she said.
She also pointed to the rapid advancement of technology, suggesting that the future of music could be even more unconventional. In a lighthearted remark, Namubiru noted that with the rise of artificial intelligence, artistes might not even need to sing in the years ahead.
Reflecting on her own generation, she emphasized that raw talent was the key determinant of success. While image and appearance played a role, they were secondary to vocal ability.
“In our time, if you had the talent, you already had a strong chance,” she implied, contrasting it with today’s landscape where success is driven by a combination of talent, branding, social media presence, and modern production tools.
Despite the changes, Namubiru acknowledged that today’s artistes are equally talented, but are navigating a more complex and fast-evolving industry.
Her insights offer a clear picture of how Uganda’s music scene has transitioned from an era of pure vocal strength to one defined by visuals, strategy, and digital innovation.
